Squawk Back: My Chocolate Wife by Gina Tron

May 20th, 2012
Everyone laughed at me for becoming debilitatingly obsessed with organizing my chocolate recipes. Until they saw the beauty that I created with it.

The mass of lard that I am legally obliged to call my wife was bullying me as usual, trying to manipulate me into giving the thing she birthed some attention again. I didn’t have time for this, had more important things on my mind; chocolate recipes to organize.

Though some people in the chocolate recipe-world organize their recipes in alphabetical order, yet I prefer the more traditional manner. What I’m speaking of, of course, is arraying from the recipe with which I am most obsessed to that with which I am the least. I excel at the process. Some say I am the King of this process, and for that I am proud. At my weekly chocolate recipe-meeting, I try desperately not to boast of my skills, but I cannot resist.

When I see Samuel trying to produce weak words out of his obese mouth, my superior lip quivers with disgust. He is inferior, and that is funny to me. Inferior because his chocolate recipe-organizational tactics are inferior, and God knows that is the most important thing in life. Some may argue that the management of a good home life and marriage are,—but take a look at how scattered them folks’ recipe drawers are.

The wee hours of the morning came as fast as I can read my most favorite chocolate recipe, and my final recipe installation was disturbed by the squawking that is the voicebox within my wife. That thing never fails to place burdens upon thine King of organization when he is at his best. I knew what must be done, that the only way to keep my sanity was to replace my wife with some sort of chocolate equivalent.

I spent the rest of the evening covering her corpse in a thick layer of chocolate while my disgusting son looked on in horror. Now he fears me and I no longer feel any guilt about ignoring his existence. And best of all, I no longer have a nagging wife. I have a chocolate wife and she supports my work. Dreams really can come true.

vajrabot: Hot Chocolate!

May 20th, 2012
Hypothesis: The Keurig pod-based coffee maker (which we just got for the break room at my day job) is capable of melting chocolate to make a really good cup of hot chocolate.

Background Research: I found that there are Hot Cocoa pods for the Keurig, but research shows that Hot Cocoa is made with cocoa powder (chocolate with the fats removed). Hot Chocolate, as opposed to Hot Cocoa, is made from actual melted chocolate and makes a much richer drink.

Attempt One: I retrieved a used coffee pod and cut it open. I removed the coffee grounds and filter that was inside and put slivers of chocolate inside (dark chocolate bars from Trader Joes), as well as a bit of sugar and cinnamon. I served it with some half-and-half.

Results: The chocolate didn’t melt very well, the hole at the bottom of the pod got clogged, hot water overflowed and it made a big mess.

Attempt Two: Hoping for a lower melting-point chocolate, I got a box of fancy chocolate truffles at grocery outlet. I reused another coffee pod. I poked several holes in the bottom of the pod to make it easier for the melted chocolate to exit the pod. I filled it with slivers of chocolate truffle, some sugar, cinnamon and cocoa powder.

Results: Better, but there was still some clogging and overflow.

Attempt Three: Same as attempt two, but I found a slightly larger pod that held more chocolate, and I poked many more and larger holes in it.

Results: The chocolate melted and drained well. The hot chocolate was rich and tasty. However, all three attempts left melted chocolate in the Keurig apparatus that was hard to clean. Since few will be willing to do a difficult cleaning of their Keurig machine after making hot chocolate, I can only conclude that Keurig-based hot chocolate will never be a commercially viable product.

sea salt almond chocolate chip cookies are my fave (guest post from …

May 14th, 2012

I had a baby so I’ve invited some fave guests to take over for me while I spend time with the little guy. Today’s smart tip post is from dessert lover and cute mom, Ashley of Oh What Fun.

YMFgpPHOTO1
If you are a child of the 80s or 90s you more than likely remember this commercial where a busy mom slaves all afternoon to make marshmallow squares for her family. If you don’t remember then maybe it is just me who gets vintage commercials & jingles stuck in her head?

Anywho, this fake out was born from necessity for yummy dessert in a flash but not wanting it to taste or look store bought, plus a remembrance of the previously referenced commercial. Feel free to try this fake out tonight when your husband asks for dessert even after he’s told you on multiple occasions to “not keep sweets in the house.” But because you know him oh so well & always have a tub-o-chocolate chip cookie dough hidden in the depths of the fridge specifically for when this situation arises you are good to go… Oh, is that a situation only I find myself in, again? Ah well. It would also work really well for unexpected guests, or just to make you seem generally awesome because people will think you actually took the time to bake for real.

Here goes… all you need is store bought cookie dough (tub, roll, little flat package, it really doesn’t matter) & the following yummy additions:
YMFgpPHOTO2
Dark chocolate chips (I prefer at least 60% cacao) + sea salt + almonds

The next trick is to take your ball of cookie dough (if working from a tub or tube it should be a BIG heaping teaspoon. From package, 2 pre-sized dough balls… we are going for BIG cookies here) & kinda flatten it in the palm of your hand. Then you add 2-3 dark chocolate chips to the center & 2-3 almonds if you want them in there & imperfectly form a mound of dough. Next you place your newly formed cookie dough mound on a cookie sheet & add a few more chocolate chips & or almonds on the top. Ideally you want 2-3 chocolate chips on the top center of the mound so they sort of form a “pool” for catching the sea salt.

YMFgpPHOTO3
Once all your dough mounds are evenly spaced on your cookie sheet, using a sea salt grinder (if you have one) or just sprinkling a pinch, yourself. Add a bit of sea salt to the top of each cookie. Aim for the center where the “pool” of chocolate chips will be created. It doesn’t have to be perfect, in fact going for that imperfect look is what you want… that makes the cookies appear homemade!

YMFgpPHOTO4
Oh look, I SEA Salt! Get it? Sea Salt instead of see salt?

Bake cookies according the directions on your package of store bought dough. Let cool slightly, remove from cookie sheet, arrange on a fancy plate or with a fancy napkin. Serve with cold milk or beverage of choice. Sit back, relax & relish all the compliments…. “Oh did you make these?!” “Yes, yes, I did.” (technically it isn’t a lie).

YMFgpPHOTO5
Finally, while I haven’t tested any of the following, adding some other fun mix-ins could result in some stellar cookie goodness. On my list is the following: Walnuts. Dried fruit. Banana Chips. M&Ms. Mini peanut butter cups. Marshmallows. Bacon. (Mmmm bacon) I truly think any of these would equal awesomeness as long as the sea salt & dark chocolate is in play. Why? Because sea salt is the star! It brings out the flavor of the chocolate. So just always at least add those two ingredients & you’ll be golden.

Any other ideas?

See more awesome from Ashley on Oh What Fun
